We would like to inform you, that the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing has introduced new provisions regarding the expiry and renewal of residence permits. According to the information of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, residence permits expiring after 24:00 (GMT+2) on 6 April 2020 will be automatically extended until 45 days after the end of the state of emergency in Hungary, and therefore, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing will not accept and process any permit renewal applications until the date described here.

Therefore if you are currently in Hungary: your residence permit automatically extends until 45 day after the end of the state of emergency.

As residence permit holders will have to apply for an extension 30 days before the expiry, i.e. until the 15th day after the emergency has been lifted, please also be aware that students whose residence permit expires while they are staying in their sending country will only be able to return to Hungary with a visa.
