From Sierra Leone to Pécs: A Journey of Self-Development

July 15th, 2025

Faith leaves Hungary with a broader worldview, international experience and a goal to improve education access in Sub-Saharan Africa. Discover how studying at the University of Pécs contributed to her professional and personal development, and how she plans to stay engaged as an alumna!

Studying in Hungary truly accelerated Faith’s professional and personal development. From cultural exchanges to travelling around Europe, she didn’t just gain a lot of experience, but also more confidence. Now, completing her Master’s in International Relations at the University of Pécs, she leaves the country with a dedication to staying connected as an alumna and a goal to develop education access for underserved children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“My name is Faith John, and I graduated from the University of Pécs with a Master’s in International Relations. Coming from Sierra Leone, studying abroad once felt like an unattainable dream. However, the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme gave me a chance to pursue an education I had only imagined, and it changed the course of my life.

Why Hungary? Why Pécs?

Hungary offered more than academic prestige. The University of Pécs stood out as a place deeply rooted in history yet forward-looking in its global perspective. Studies in International Relations encouraged me to engage with issues of diplomacy, development, and global cooperation.

A Global Learning Environment

Beyond lectures and seminars, I was immersed in a vibrant international community. My classmates came from all over the world, and together we shared ideas, cultures, and perspectives. Every group project, classroom debate, and informal gathering became a space of connection and mutual learning. We did not just study together—we grew together.

A City That Embraced Me

Living in Pécs, a warm and culturally rich city, added something special to my journey. I felt at home walking through its cobblestone streets, visiting museums, or celebrating international days with friends. Pécs gave me more than an education; it gave me a sense of belonging, identity, and lifelong friendships.

Travel: Education Without Borders

One of the most rewarding parts of my time in Hungary was the chance to travel across Europe and North America. I explored Austria, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Croatia, the United States, and Canada. These trips were more than sightseeing; they were extensions of my education, exposing me to new governance systems, cultures, and ways of thinking. For someone who once never imagined leaving Sierra Leone, this was both liberating and transformational.

The Challenges That Strengthened Me

Studying abroad came with its challenges. I balanced demanding coursework with part-time jobs in restaurants, kitchens, and factories, often commuting long hours. These experiences taught me resilience, time management, and discipline, reminding me of the strength found in perseverance and purpose.

Looking Ahead with Purpose

My time in Hungary strengthened my commitment to improving education access in Sub-Saharan Africa. I hope to establish non-formal education programs for underserved children aged 7 to 17, with a focus on practical, skills-based learning that builds confidence and independence.

Giving Back as an Alumna

Now, I look forward to mentoring new international students and sharing insights to help them navigate their studies with confidence. I will stay connected, participate in events, and serve as an ambassador to promote education and cultural exchange.

To Future Scholars

Your journey may be difficult, but it will be worth it. Embrace every challenge, celebrate every moment, and trust in your growth. Hungary shaped me, and it can shape you too. I leave with more than a degree, but I carry a broader worldview, renewed confidence, and deep gratitude.”
