About me

My name is Sourav De, mentor in the University of Debrecen. The Stipendium Hungaricum Mentor Network is a great initiative taken by HÖOK for the newcomers to feel at home. Being a mentor of this network allowed me to expand my experience, memories and meet new people. I am more than happy to be a part of this international family.

By spending time abroad, we increase our curiosity about other cultures. We want to know more about foreigners and we are not anymore afraid of moving from one country to another. Hungary is becoming increasingly popular for studying abroad, having gained great credibility over the years and has a very strong tradition in the sciences. Beyond high-quality education, Hungary also offers a lively and welcoming culture, a fascinating history and beautiful cities. Altogether, Stipendium Hungaricum is a remarkable experience.

Mentorship can offer wisdom and encouragement that helps to bring out the best version of both mentors and mentees. Moving to a new country with a different culture can sometimes make life challenging, however, mentors can make it simpler. I am more than happy to be a part of this international family.

In my mentorship experience, I feel that setting the limits and boundaries for the mentor/mentee relationship is the most challenging aspect.

Which part of mentoring do I enjoy the most? Bringing people together based on the principles of respect for diversity, passion for making a change in people’s lives and desire to build an everlasting trustful relationship is the most enjoyable part of my mentoring.

I think my favourite memory so far is the amazing discussions my mentees used to make together. I still remember the very first day when we all met – most of them were shy and hardly spoke to each other. However, after a few weeks of several meetings, they became so free to each other that they almost forgot my existence. That was my best day as a mentor ever.

Just in the same way as positive words can make you smile when you are down, or a funny quote can make you laugh – mentors can shine on mentees’ sky in their hard and stressful days to make their path easy and smooth.
